Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
