Fresh analysis reveals that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying such medications should be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally have a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Testimonies
People who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you become ravenous," said an individual.
This challenge is worsened if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle support.
